David Ernest Duke, born on July 1, 1950, is an American white supremacist and former political leader. He was a prominent figure in the white nationalist movement in the United States from the 1970s until the early 2000s.
Duke was involved with various white supremacist organizations, including the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and the National Association for the Advancement of White People (NAAWP), which he founded. He was a Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan from 1974 to 1980. Duke's political career began in the late 1970s when he ran as a Democrat for various political offices, including the Louisiana State Senate and the U.S. Senate.
Despite facing several electoral defeats, Duke gained attention and a certain level of support for his white supremacist views, which he masked under the guise of advocating for "white rights" and opposing affirmative action. His rhetoric was highly divisive and xenophobic, targeting minorities, Jewish people, and immigrants.
In later years, Duke attempted to rebrand himself as a more mainstream politician, distancing himself from his neo-Nazi and KKK affiliations. He ran for various political offices as a Republican, including the Louisiana governorship in 1991 and a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1999. However, he was unable to secure significant electoral success.
David Duke's influence has diminished since the early 2000s, but he remains an iconic figure within the white supremacist movement. He continues to espouse his extremist views through his website, podcast, and appearances at far-right events. His presence in the public sphere has often been met with strong opposition and condemnation from mainstream society.
